A New Strategy for Pro-lifers

By Alan Thorne, Director, Created4Life

In 1831 William Wilberforce sent a message to the Anti-Slavery Society: “Our motto must continue to be perseverance. And ultimately I trust the Almighty will crown our efforts with success.” They had already campaigned against slavery for decades and progress was slow. Wilberforce issued his encouragement: Don’t give up!

It is fairly obvious that many pro-life campaigners are currently disheartened and wondering what can be done to reduce the number of daily abortions. I would like to suggest a new strategy which is sustainable, repeatable and effective. We must press on, even when the political climate is hostile.

Wilberforce campaigned for 40 years. During that time he changed his tactics several times whilst fighting the injustice of slavery. “In March 1796 Wilberforce lost another bill, this time by only four votes, but it soon became apparent that slavery would not have parliament’s attention again until the French Revolution was over. In the intervening time, Wilberforce focused on what he termed “the reformation of manners.” As he considered the root of social problems, he came to the conclusion that if the morals of the country could be reformed, then crime, poverty and other problems would diminish.” [William Wilberforce: The Persevering Parliamentarian http://www.vision.org/visionmedia/article.aspx?id=2266 emphasis mine]

There are several legitimate ways that pro-lifers can be active: attempting to change abortion laws is one approach but it may be time to change tack, at least for a while. Many pro-lifers are very uncomfortable with protests and graphic abortion photographs but want to do more than sit in a crisis pregnancy centre waiting for the phone to ring.

Created4Life in town centres and on campus.

Created4Life has developed a new strategy that has a direct effect, causing individuals to choose not to abort their baby. Created4Life is changing the way the public regard the pre-born and altering their attitude to abortion. Created4Life’s method is friendly and engages the public.

The methods that Created4Life are using powerfully demonstrate that we are having a positive impact. Those who have seen the Created4Life display table are choosing NOT to abort their babies. They are changing their minds about having an abortion and they are writing to thank us! The effectiveness  of Created4Life was startlingly and tragically brought home to us recently when one lady told us, “I wish I’d seen your table 18 years ago.”

The reaction?

The public are very welcoming and there are times when we can't keep up with the interest! Pro-lifers often tell us that they are amazed by seeing such positive reactions. One student commented, “It was striking to compare the effect, in terms of lives saved and minds changed, of yesterday’s efforts [one hour with a Created4Life display table] with all the work that has gone into the political campaigning over the last year.”

Created4Life provides the resources, training, help and advice to pro-life volunteers who want to set up and run this simple and effective method in town centres, university campuses, local markets etc.

A new focus.

We are calling upon pro-life campaigners to give this a try. It will require some regular commitment and perhaps a few adjustments but it will be worth the effort. Imagine how you will feel when a mother eagerly explains that you helped them choose to keep their baby rather than have her aborted as they had originally planned. The baby is in her arms as she tells you!

I’ve deliberately kept from giving you a description of the methods we use. “It’s really hard to imagine what it’s like until you see it.” That was the comment a young student made to me the other day. He was talking about the Created4Life display table and the interest it attracts. The best way to find out for yourself is to join us one day. If you can’t make it here, pay for our tickets ;-) and we’ll come and show you, or, failing that, take a look at our website. Details are below.
